Guv seeks explanation on amendment

Last Updated 11 November 2010, 16:58 IST

The Government on Tuesday requested the governor to promulgate an ordinance repealing the amendments to the Act that reduced the representation for OBCs in zilla and taluk panchayats.

Following opposition from a section of ministers and Opposition party leaders, the State Cabinet decided to repeal the ordinance issued on October 4.

Official sources said the government, while making a request to the governor, had not explained legal implications of repealing the order. The ordinance was promulgated as per the provisions in tune with the ruling of the Supreme Court.

As the government had not made available explanation while making the request, the governor had returned the file to the government seeking explanation and the opinion of the Advocate General, it is said.

The government will also have to explain whether promulgation of an ordinance to repeal the ordinance issued on October 4 would create legal hurdles which may delay elections to the local bodies.
