For all those health freaks who prefer a healthy breakfast, head straight to Iyer Tiffin Centre, tucked away in a bylane of N R Colony. This eight-year-old eatery has soared in its popularity, thanks to its authentic Iyengar food and mouth-watering snacks.

This joint was started by Sukumar and Gayathri in 2002 with the idea of serving authentic Iyer tiffin to the neighbourhood. Since then this place has been attracting people from across the City. Though the eatery is small, it promises to satiate tastes with its unique way of preparation.

The specialty of the food here is that there’s not a hint of baking soda or any taste makers added to enhance taste. The dough is homemade, and is authentically prepared using home products and natural ingredients.

The breakfast menu has soft idlis, vada, khara bath, kesari bath, avalakki bath, onion dosa, puri, sagu, rice bath, chapati and sagu. The evening menu has an addition of crispy akki roti, menthya roti with chilli chutney which is popular with those who frequent this place. And what’s more all this comes cheap between Rs 10 and Rs 15. Sunday special menu has masala dosa and bisibelebath.

Sathyanarayan, who looks after this eating joint, makes the menthya rotis himself since he's an expert at it. “We have a different menu for morning and evening, as people like the variety here and also there's no compromise on the taste, I make the rotis myself to see it’s made to perfection,” he says. The akki roti is priced at Rs 10 and the other items could go up to Rs 15.

The exclusivity of these ‘rotis’ are that they are really crisp and scrumptious. One would just not stop there, they also have sweets to relish such as badusha, badam puri, and hot jamoons and mixture as a special condiment is available here. The jamoons are especially very soft and taste just like home. Each of these is available for just Rs five.
The regulars swear by the food here. Venugopal, who frequents this place, says, “I simply love the akki rotis and chapatis here, it’s different from other hotels and it is very healthy, and tastes just like homemade iyer tindi.”

Sudarshan says, “What I like most here is that they don't use soda in anything that they prepare. What more can you ask for and the rates are very reasonable. The dosa here is soft and tasty.” Iyer Tiffin Centre is open between 7.30 am and 11.30 am and 5.30 pm and 9.30 pm.
