DH photo Speaking at the National Day for Disaster Reduction here on Friday, the Governor said the Home Guards, Civil Defence and Fire and Emergency Services should be brought under a single umbrella.

He said the government should ensure speedy rescue operations during emergencies and natural calamities.

Home Minister R Ashoka said there was a need to train public at large and students in disaster management for people’s cooperation in times of emergencies matter most in rescue operations.

He said the Home Department will purchase equipment required to take up rescue operation during emergencies in high rise buildings. As many as 3,000 students and Home Guards and Civil Defence staff participated. Home Guards, Civil Defence and Fire and Emergency Services DG & IGP Jeeja Hari Singh, director Chengappa, IGP P S Sandhu and Home Department secretary Raghavendra Auradkar were present on the occasion.

Ashoka refutes irregularity charges

Home Minister R Ashoka has refuted the reports of alleged irregularity in denotification of a land owned by him.

Referring to a report appeared in a daily, the Minister said he had parted with 60 per cent of his land for construction of the Ring Road.

“The Bangalore Development Authority, in lieu of payment of compensation, denotified the 40 per cent of remaining land. What is illegal in this,?” he sought to know. Ashoka said the report puts the land cost at Rs 15 crore and he was ready to sell it even if it fetched Rs five crore.

The BDA had utilised 29 gunta acquired from a person named Shamanna some 30 years ago for the construction of the road. Shamanna had requested the BDA to denotify the remaining 14 gunta of unutilised land. The request however was not granted.

Ashoka purchased the land from Shamanna. It is alleged he got the land denotified with the help of Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa.
