Local residents and city-based animal welfare organisation, Compassion Unlimited Plus Action (CUPA) alerted police, who have booked a case under IPC section 429 (killing or maiming animals).

Police have yet to make any arrests in connection with the incident. The Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO), a national umbrella organisation of animal welfare groups, is now offering up to Rs 20,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons "responsible for this crime".

FIAPO said it believes that other animals in the area -– and even human residents -– might be in danger as long as those responsible for this crime are at large and urged residents not to leave animals outside unattended.

Sandhya Madappa, Trustee of CUPA, which is one of the founding organisations of FIAPO, said: "We are waiting for the postmortem results conducted by the forensic department. The poison from the food has also been sent for analysis. Bengaloreans have reason to be concerned."
