The statute restricted any structure in a radius of 300 metres of the ancient monuments. Site owners in the area were not allowed to take up any construction.
The Superintending Archaeologist, Karnataka Zone, Archaeological Department, had issued a notice to clear all structures in the no-construction zone in Melkote.
The provisions of the Act were vehemently opposed by the residents of Srirangapatna, Belur and other places of historical interest.
