The parents of the girl, who are labourers, left her at the Collectorate, saying authorities "did not take proper care" of their daughter and as "punishment" they should look after her.

"We thought you will take care of our child at your school. But you did not take proper care of her, leading to a teacher raping her. We don't require her now. You take care of her. As punishment, you should take care of our girl now," they told officials.

The 13-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her maths teacher who threatened that he would fail her in his subject if she did not oblige him.

The girl was studying at a government school with boarding and lodging facility under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan at T.Bomminayakan patti, police said.

She had complained to her mother on November 25, when she visited her, following which a complaint was lodged, the police said.

The teacher, Mahendran, who was absconding, surrended today, sources said. The authorities have made arrangements to admit the girl in a government home for girls.
The parents were accompanied by some members of the Dalit-based Puthiya Tamizhagam Party, officials said.
