Three separate press conferences were convened in Bangalore, including one by Puttaswamy himself, making it obvious that the BJP was bent on drawing maximum political mileage out the incident.

Puttaswamy had alleged with supporting documents that Deve Gowda and his family members had illegally acquired 82.01 acres of government land in Hassan district by violating rules.

Food and Civil Supplies Minister V Somanna held JD (S) State president H D Kumaraswamy directly responsible for the attack and said the JD(S) had plunged the State politics to a new low. But the BJP would not be deterred by such tactics and would soon expose more misdeeds of the Gowda family, he said. “Kumaraswamy has crossed the limits. We will not sit quiet any longer,” the BJP leader said.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Puttaswamy alleged that some 50 to 60 activists of the JD(S), instigated by Kumaraswamy, attacked his house on Tuesday night and even threatened to kill him. “They broke flowerpots, smashed windowpanes and also damaged my car,” he said.

Threat

Days before the attack, Kumaraswamy had threatened him with dire consequences on live television if he continued his tirade against the Gowda family, Puttaswamy said. A first information report has been filed and a case registered by the police.

Puttaswamy said he would not yield to pressure tactics and would take the allegations he made against the Gowda family to its logical end. He said the onus was now on Kumaraswamy to disprove the charges or resign from public life.

Puttaswamy charged Kumaraswamy and his brother Revanna with abusing Chief Minister Yeddyurappa and being “intolerant” towards to anybody saying anything against their family.

BJP Spokesperson S Prakash said Kumaraswamy had no moral right to continue in public life and should immediately step down as party president.
