JOIN USEnvoy George Mitchell made the pledge after meeting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday.
Abbas aide Saeb Erekat says Mitchell presented ideas on how to move forward, now that there is little possibility of resuming direct negotiations.
Israel has rejected calls to extend a curb on West Bank settlement construction, without which the Palestinians won’t negotiate. The US says it will discuss the key issues of the conflict separately with the two sides.
Mitchell says “we are determined to persevere in our efforts until we reach the successful conclusion,” including Palestinian statehood.
Earlier, Mitchell held a meeting with Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Monday, days after the US dropped its offer for a package of incentives in exchange for a temporary Israeli settlement freeze in the West Bank.
