This has created problems for labourers, construction workers, contractors and citizens.

They submitted a memorandum to tahsildar Mallikarjun on Thursday, putting forth their complaint of lack of work.

About 4,000 people in the rural areas of the taluk are employed in different kinds of construction work in urban areas. Stopping transport of sand has denied all of these people their work, causing them severe problems, they explained.

All government work including road widening, building concrete roads, drains, court buildings, Main Canal construction under the Minor Irrigation Department, student hostels of the Social Welfare Department, Morarji Desai Residential School, work under the Railway Department, has reached a standstill.

The people have requested permission for transport of sand only in the interior areas of the taluk so that labourers and contractors would have means of income.

Tahsildar Mallikarjun said the government had no intention of inconveniencing workers. “If the engineers give us clear documents on the necessity of sand for various work as well as the places were sand is available in the taluk, we shall bring it to the notice of the Mining and Geology Department.”

Manjunath, Muralidhara, Venkatesha, Gopal, Manjunatha V, Venkata Reddy and others handed over the memorandum as representatives of construction workers and labourers.
