Five drown as coracle capsizes

Similar accidents were reported last week in Mysore and Davangere districts.

The deceased include two women and three children. Police sources stated that all the five people were returning to the village, after harvesting cotton from their fields adjacent to the reservoir. A student escaped unhurt in the accident. The children had gone to assist their family members in the fields, as Saturday was a holiday for their school. The deceased are Jayavva Bandekar (40), Girija Bandekar (13), Akshata Bandekar (13), Chenavva Babari (14) and Sevanthi Babari (35).

Jayavva, Girija and Akshata were members of the same family. Help was sought from the district headquarters to fish out the bodies and two bodies have been recovered so far.
Due to poor visibility, the operation to recover the other bodies received a setback.
