The 36th Annual Cake Show, in association with the National Consumer Fair, is being held at St Joseph’s Indian High School. The cynosure of the show this year is the model of The Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai which was attacked by terrorists.  The cake is 22-ft long, 14- feet high and 18-feet wide. Nearly five tonnes of sugar was used to create this cake.

C Ramachandran, the brain behind the creation of this enormous structure, said, “I was inspired to create a replica of this hotel to pay a tribute to all the victims and martyrs of the 26/11 tragedy. This model is dedicated to the struggle and pain they went through during that time. It took us nearly 18,000 hours and 15 people to create and erect this structure,” he adds.

The second biggest attraction in this show is Santa Villa, which is 30-feet long, 12-feet high and 20-feet wide. Nearly three tonnes of sugar has been used to make this model.

“This Villa is created specially for the kids since Christmas is just around the corner. It will have  Santa Claus distributing gifts, chocolates and sweets to children who visit the exhibition,” said Ramachandran.

The models are made of icing sugar, gelatin and egg white. It has synthetic permitted food colours and hence it is edible.

Some of the models are an eight-feet long wedding cake, Humpty Dumpty on a Wall, Bunny House, Filigree Work, an intricate pattern which is done on the cake, Jewel Box, Boat House and Grandfather Clock.

This is not all, the exhibition will also have special counters selling rich plum and special cakes, chocolates, marzipans, cookies and pastries. The food court will have chaats, pizzas, rolls, momos, condiments, special ice-creams to treat the taste buds. There are also counters for lifestyle products, furniture, mobile phones, automobiles, jewellery, footwear, electronic goods, tourism etc.

“This is the first-of-its kind in India. Nobody has come up with such a unique concept and this fair will cater to all the needs of the consumer under one roof,” said Gautam Agarwal, organiser and director, National Consumer Fair.

The exhibition is on till December 27 and is open from 11 am to 9 pm.
