Bangalore's rural pockets poll today

The panchayat seats are spread across the areas bordering the city. Voting will be held in 33 of the 34 ZP seats in Bangalore Urban district, as a candidate for the Machohalli ZP seat has been elected unopposed.

The other constituencies of Bangalore Urban ZP are spread across the Assembly constituencies of Anekal, Mahadevapura, Yelahanka, Yeshwanthpura, Byatarayanapura and KR Pura. As many as 14 ZP seats fall under Anekal constituency, represented by Minister Anekal Narayanaswamy.

In the elections held for the panchayat institutions in 2005, the district had 26 ZP constituencies. Following the formation of BBMP, there was delimitation in Bangalore Urban ZP. Now, the number of ZP seats has gone up to 34.

The BJP is contesting all the 33 seats, the Congress has put up its candidates in 32 and the JD(S) has fielded its candidates for 27 seats. In the previous elections, the Congress had held the reins of power in the ZP, after winning 16 seats out of a total of 26. The BJP had won seven seats and JD(S) three.

Bangalore Urban ZP
The Bangalore Urban district consists four Taluk Panchayats - Anekal, Bangalore North, Bangalore South and Bangalore East, with a total of 72 seats. Four candidates of the BJP have been elected unopposed. Voting is being held for the rest of the 68 seats.

Bangalore Rural ZP
As many as 18 ZP seats coming under the Bangalore Rural district go to the polls on Sunday. The constituencies are spread over four taluks - Hoskote, Devanahalli, Doddaballapur and Nelamangala. The JD(S) had held power in the ZP, following the elections in 2005.
