The people also built a temporary compound wall using stones to prevent work.
Plantation owners, who reside on the other side of the cemetery, were using the path that passes through the cemetery until now. The last two days, however, they used earth-movers to build a road without obtaining permission from authorities.

Unrecognisable
They have also destroyed graves that are more than a hundred years old for the work. This has made it difficult for people to recognise the graves, said the residents of Harohalli, and added that their sentiments had been disrespected.

The protest was carried on from morning till the evening. Circle Inspector Khan and Sub-inspector Nagaraj visited the cemetery to pacify the protesters. They also assured the people that provision would be made for construction of road adjacent to the cemetery.

Landowner refuses
Sonnegowda, the owner of the plot neighbouring the cemetery, however, refused to let any construction work carry on on his field. Therefore, the matter could not be settled on Wednesday. The protesters continued their dharna despite onset of night.City Municipal Council vice-president Muralidhar said that both parties- the protesters and Sonnegowda- would meet and the problem would be solved.
