Waste sorting station inaugurated

Last Updated 12 January 2011, 18:52 IST

Inaugurating the stations, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner Siddaiah said the Palike spends nearly Rs 200 crore in collecting and dumping garbage at the dump yard. “Garbage from the City is mainly transported to the dumping yard which is creating a lot of health hazards to those who are residing close to the dumping site. We are making attempts to scientifically dispose garbage in the City itself which is also an eco-friendly method,” he said.

Bangalore City alone produces 3,000 metric tonne of garbage everyday. It is the duty of every citizen and communities to dispose them scientifically, he said.

Ward No 148- Eijipura alone produces two tonnes of garbage which will be sorted, recycled and reused. Wet garbage will be mainly converted into manure and sold and remaining five to 10 per cent will be sent to the dumping yard. Nearly 40 per cent of the garbage is dry waste which can be reused.

The decentralised solid waste management has been implemented in association with CHF International, Christ University and Saahas.
