He was speaking after inaugurating flower show, organised as part of the Republic Day celebrations here on Wednesday. The local MLA has suggested developing the Silver Jubilee Park as a model park in city and for the benefit of morning joggers and walkers.

Commending the the idea, Somanna said the government would be forthcoming to implement the plan if the district administration comes out with a detailed plan of action and estimated cost for the project, he said.

The Minister said the park was spread on about eight acres where the horticulture department also has its office. The administration could explore options of allot different land for the horticulture department and convert the park into a more appealing space for public use, he added.

Later, speaking to reporters, Somanna said a new building of the engineering college will be open for the students starting Feb 5. Replying to a query, he said the PWD department was directed to complete all works before Feb 5 and transfer the building to the college management.

It should be recalled that Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa had opened the college building during a programme about five months back. But, differences between the contractor and the government over the expenditure had led to contractor turning adamant against finish the work, only after the PWD department cleared payment dues.

The Minister said the issue between the contractor and the government was resolved and the latter would transfer the building to the college management at the earliest.
MLA Prakash said the spaces which were meant for parks in many layouts in the city were encroached upon by the influential people.

The Government should order a probe and book cases against the culprits, he said. ZP president Mahadevamma, vice- president Dyavegowda, Additional Deputy Commissioner Subramanyam, SP Sharath Chandra were present.
