Doctors use advanced graft methods, avoid limb amputation

According to a press release, Dr Pramod Kumar, HoD of Plastic Surgery at the hospital, found severe burns on dorsal aspect of both hands. Metacarpal bones were exposed and all the extensor tendons of the right hand were grossly damaged.

After wound bed preparation and removal of dead bones, skin grafting was done on the affected area and specialised plastic cover dressing named Limited Access Dressing (LAD) was applied for one month. The operation was successful and 100 per cent graft uptake occurred.

Limited access dressing is a combination of moist wound healing and intermittent negative pressure dressing designed and developed under the leadership of Dr Pramod Kumar. Many a limb amputation was avoided using this dressing in the hospital in the last few years.

Meanwhile, the patient obtained clinical Psychology consultation and was referred to Occupational Therapy Department for rehabilitation to attain functional independence. Now with the help of inbuilt spoon and brush, he is able to perform his basic needs without the help on another person, the release added.
