'No reason for Bindra to be dropped'

Last Updated 18 February 2011, 16:23 IST

The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) will announce the Indian squad on Sunday in the midst of reports that Bindra and Narang might be ignored, owing to their non-participation in the 34th National Games -- which also serves as a selection trial -- underway here. “The moving average scores of Bindra and Narang are much higher than some of the participants here,” said Thomas. “Whenever a squad is picked, their scores are taken into account and considering their scores are high, I don’t see any reason in them being dropped.

“Moreover, Bindra has sought permission for training in Germany while Narang is waiting for his new pistol. They have valid reasons and have explained it to the federation.”
NRAI Secretary Rajiv Bhatia also accorded Thomas’ view in a different way. “The participation of shooters is completely at the hands of respective State associations. It is up to them to decide who they want to send,” Rajiv said.
