BSP legislator Haji Yaqoob Qureshi on Thursday assaulted a traffic cop in Meerut town in full public view and before the senior police officials. The traffic constable dared to stop the MLA’s vehicle when it entered a no-entry zone.

The MLA not only used unparliamentary language against the hapless cop Chain Singh Baliyan but also tore his uniform, reports said.

The cop felt so humiliated that he had threatened to resign. “My seniors remained mute spectators as the MLA assaulted me,” he reportedly told the senior police officials.
Traders, lawyers and citizens on Friday held a demonstration in Meerut to register their protest against Qureshi’s manhandling of the cop.

Qureshi who is known for his aggressive behaviour had shot into limelight in 2006 during his stint as the minority welfare minister, he had declared a reward of Rs 51 crore to whosoever beheaded the Danish cartoonist who had caricatured Prophet Muhammad.
