The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) Chief Traffic Manager (Management) K S Vishwanath has hinted at the merger of BMTC with Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRC) in future.

“No other transport system can function as an alternative to BMTC as it is the most passenger-friendly public mode of transportation. It is baseless to presume that the BMTC will loose its passenger base if the BMRC starts functioning. Both systems will be merged with each other to provide services in future,” he said while delivering a lecture on ‘Bus Transportation in Bangalore.

Separate lanes

Emphasising construction of separate lanes for buses, he said that the speed of the buses will increase up to 26 kilometre per hours from the present 15 kmph, if Road Rapid Transit System is implemented with construction of separate lanes for buses. He opined that the Government should be prevailed upon for construction of separate lanes.

Focus is being laid on construction of bus terminus with  multiple facilities. Work on construction of 10 Traffic Terminus Management Centres is in full swing. The Centres are being brought up in areas where more than five acres of land is available. Parking facilities, ticket booking counters and other facilities will be offered at such centres, he disclosed.

Fleet-augmentation

Detailing the fleet-augmentati on programme of BMTC, Vishwanath revealed that as many as 1,000 ordinary buses and 200 Volvo buses will be inducted to the existing fleet.
The services to Bengaluru International Airport have evoked good response with as many as 6,000 people bound for airport travelling by Vayu Vajra buses, he informed.

Steps have been taken to offer quality services to the passengers.

Hence, the travelling public should change their mindset and come forward to travel by the BMTC buses more in number, he requested.

The programme was organised by Engineers’ Association.
