There were 26 vacant posts of CMD/MD and 45 posts of functional directors in public sector units, Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises A Sai Prathap said in a written reply to Lok Sabha here.

"The reasons for vacancies in board level posts in CPSEs are delay in obtaining vigilance clearance/approval of competent authority, selection of existing board level incumbent to other (or higher) post, unforeseen vacancies due to resignation/death/non-extension of tenure of existing board level incumbent," he said.

Besides, he said, other reasons are scrapping of panel recommended by Public Enterprises Selection Board by the competent authority and creation of new board level posts and court cases.

Asked by when all such appointments will be made on regular basis, Prathap said, the filling up of board level posts in CPSEs is a continuous process and these vacant posts get filled on a regular basis, after the incumbent takes charge of the post on completion of all the formalities in this regard. As on March 2009, there were 246 CPSEs in the country.
