I-T fair: Lukewarm response on Day 1

Last Updated 16 July 2009, 19:29 IST

Although the Day One turnout was lukewarm, the response is expected to pick up as the deadline approaches. The Income Tax Department had made elaborate arrangements for different categories of tax payers at the new site.

People kept streaming in to the venue but the rush expected on the first day was not visible. The special counters will continue to function till the last day of filing tax returns.

With background music to help the customers relax and food counters setup in the vicinity to provide refreshments, the place was all set by Thursday afternoon. While counters at the entrance helped the customers with their Permanent Account Number (PAN) card problems, the inside counters were systematically divided depending upon the salaried and business class citizens who came to file their returns.

Counters were placed directly under the supervision of the Assistant Commissioner of the Income tax for customers who had a turnover of over Rs 10 lakh. Each of these counters were manned by three officials from the department.

Government and public undertaking firms had a separate set of counters dedicated for their employees while private individuals were given a few counters to file their returns.
Senior citizens and physically challenged individuals found their counters at the entrance making it easy for their entrance and exit. Individuals were seen going to counters and filing their returns as the queues diminished as the day progressed.
