Last Updated 16 July 2009, 19:35 IST

The strike was called off by the Majlis-e-Mushawarat Shopian (MMS), spearheading the agitation, after the special investigation team (SIT) of police arrested four police officers for destroying the evidences in the case. SIT made the arrests on the directions of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, which also appealed the people to end their general strike and assured them justice in the case.

Mohammad Shafi Khan, a spokesman of MMS said the strike was called off on the appeal of Chief Justice Barin Gosh. “We are satisfied with his directions to the police to arrest the four police officers and are hopeful that the real culprits would be also behind the bars. However, our protest programme will continue,” he said.

Immediately after the decision of the MMS, shops, other business establishments, government offices and educational institutions reopened. Transport also plied on roads again.
