Staff negligence blamed for kill bid in jail

Last Updated 17 March 2011, 21:48 IST

Ramdas told the media that the jail staffers’ collusion with the prisoners enabled smuggling of a gun easily into the jail. He said he had visited the jail previously following a complaint from the prisoners holding three staffers responsible for the shoddy deals inside.

The minister said security measures will be beefed up - with luggage scanners, door-frame metal detectors and increasing the height of the compound- to prevent similar incidents in future. The police commissioner is investigating into the case, and the enquiry will begin from March 14.

Narayanswamy said he will be “showing the door” to staff members possessing SIM cards other than the official card issued by the department, as some staffers were smuggling SIM cards to inmates to enable them to communicate with their associates  outside.
ADGP (Prisons) Kuchchanna Srinivasan accompanied the minister.
