15 kgs ovarian cyst removed from 71-year-old woman

The patient Girijamma, had a history of bulging abdomen and had been suffering from severe abdominal pain when she approached the doctor.

"Preliminary investigations revealed that she had developed a huge mass (cyst) in her Ovaries. The large size and weight of the cyst caused her severe abdominal pain and bulging abdomen. The tumor would have been dangerous to the patient if left untreated. Hence, the patient had to be operated immediately. As, the patient was old, radical surgery was performed to remove the tumor", said, Dr Kishore C Kumtakar, Consultant, OBG, Dr Malathi Manipal Hospital who performed the surgery.

The tumour was found to be benign.Girijamma who will soon be discharged said, "some years ago, a doctor did tell me that I had a cyst in my ovaries, but I did not take any treatment as there was no severe pain or problem as such. When the pain in my abdomen used to crop up once in a while, I ignored it since it was mild and I did not realize the seriousness of the problem. It was only when the pain aggravated and it was constant, I consulted the doctor".
