'At Lansdowne, MCC rectified its mistake'

Last Updated 23 March 2011, 16:10 IST

It seems to be true, if gone by the words of Lansdowne Building Tenants Association President R Murthy.

Addressing media here on Wednesday, Murthy alleged that the tenants of the good old building  had gone ahead extending the portion of the shops only after the city corporation gave the required permission. He denied that the shopkeepers had encroached the pavements illegally.

Had the MCC given sufficient time, the shopkeepers would have removed it voluntarily. “We (shopkeepers) received the notice on March 18 around 4 pm, and were shocked to learn the following day that the gangmen of the local body have swung into action. The very act brought disrepute the traders by depicting them in a bad picture.

Bundh tomorrow

The Jewellers Association of Mysore has decided to observe one day bundh on March 25 against hike in VAT on jewellery from one per cent to two per cent.

In a press release here, K J Srinivasashetty, joint secretary of the association has said the chief minister, B S Yeddyurappa, in the recent State Budget for the year 2011-12, has proposed hike in VAT on gold and silver articles.

This move would not increase the taxes collected; on the contrary, it would have an adverse effect on the trade.
