Indians struggled to negotiate some tougher challenges thrown by the Nepali paddlers and survived some anxious moments before carving out a 3-1 victory to be on top of Group I.
Mallika Bhandarkar led the attack in the cadet girls’ section as India outplayed both Nepal and Maldives 3-0 to emerge on top of the points tally.
Bhandarkar found able allies in compatriots Camelia Sil and RT Rishya.
The hosts continued their domination in the junior (U-18) category of the two-day tournament as girls mauled arch-rivals Pakistan and Maldives 3-0 to take the top spot.
Meanwhile, the junior boys’ team of India hardly broke a sweat to defeat Nepal and Maldives 3-0 to climb up the points table.
India has fielded a 16-member squad in the tournament which will be followed by the 15th Asian Junior Table Tennis Championship from July 22 at the same venue.
