"To defeat the DMK-led alliance in the coming election, some officials are acting like in emergency period, intercepting vehicles and pedestrians checking them whether they are carrying money and giving troubles to the innocent. This is like a mini emergency period in Tamil Nadu," he told an election meeting here late tonight.

"During the emergency, thousands of DMK men were affected and were tortured and when I took it up with Indira Gandhi later, she felt sorry and said she was not aware of such excesses faced by DMK men. She said such incidents occurred due to officials and apologised for the same," he said.

Targeting the opposition AIADMK-led combine, Karunanidhi said his party's allies had assured that he would be the Chief Minister if the front was elected but it was not so in the rival camp. He said DMK government had fulfilled all its promises made in 2006 elections and would implement the present manifesto if the party was voted to power again.

Karunanidhi said during the last five years of DMK rule, the growth of industries in the state had been impressive. More than Rs 50,000 crore worth of industries were set up, he said. This was the reason for the power cut, he said adding the DMK government had formulated a number of electricity projects which would be completed in the next three years.
