MGNREGS workers approach labour court

Last Updated 18 April 2011, 18:04 IST

Basavaraja Chennabasappa Malekoppa of the village has filed a case against the CEO of the ZP, CEO of the TP and the secretary of the Betageri GP. The move comes after a series of protests were staged, but to no effect.

M V Mudagalla, the advocate for the petitioners, said that this was the first time in the State that a person entitled to the benefits of MGNREGS was going to court. Malekoppa has filed the case on behalf of 43 farmers, including himself.

As per the MGNREGS rules, 100 days of work was completed in 2009-10. But the dues were not settled.

The Betageri GP secretary had, in December last year, told the labour court that the dues for the first 24 workers out of the 43 on behalf of whom the case has been filed would be settled by March 31.
