The third reactor at the station has been shut down for the past 10 days after a fire accident, which was termed as a “false alarm” by the Director of the station, J P Gupta.
Hegde claimed that besides the recent fire, the third reactor at the station was beset with other problems.

“Since Parliament is not in session, we have not been able to draw attention to this issue. But, I have written to the Prime Minister about it,” he said.

The Member of Parliament, who arrived here on Monday, told reporters that the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) would be urged to investigate  the problem in the third reactor.

“There is a need to conduct a survey to find out the radiation level in the surrounding areas and also to assess the health condition of those living around the power station,” he said.

Following the fire in the third unit, Gupta had said that it was just a smoke detection alarm that went off and there was no fire. He also maintained that the reactor would be shut down for the biannual tests and maintenance and that it would  resume power generation from Sunday, April 17.

But the reactor had not resumed functioning even on Monday and there was no official word on the delay from the authorities in the power generation station.
