WHO meet on safe surgery

The fifteen hospitals that will participate in the workshop are Manipal Health system - Manipal Hospital, Malathi Manipal Hospital, Manipal Northside Hospital, Manipal Speciality Hospital, Nu Trust Hospital, Global Hospital, Columbia Asia Hospital, Baptist Hospital, Bhagwan Mahavir Jain Hospital, Sindhi Hospital, Bangalore Institute of Oncology, Victoria Hospital, Vickram Hospital from Mysore, St Martha's Hospital, Sagar Hospitals, Bangalore Hospital and Krishna Sevashrama Hospital. 

WHO has launched two slogans about patient safety challenges - Clean care is safer care and Safe surgery saves lives. The aim is to stress the importance of safety issues like inadequate anaesthetic safety practices, avoidable surgical infection and poor communication among team members.

In India, the initiative is spearheaded by WHO and Indian Confederation of Healthcare Accreditation (ICHA).

 WHO has prescribed 10 parameters for Safe Surgery that includes, among others,  the team will operate on the correct patient at the correct site; use methods known to prevent harm from administering anaesthetics, while protecting the patient from pain; recognise and effectively prepare for life-threatening loss of airway or respiratory function and risk of high blood loss.
