Mudigere may get separate forest department squad

The district has a CID Forest Mobile Patrolling Squad and there are plans to provide one more squad headquartered at Mudigere having Mudigere, Banakal, Kalasa region under it, said CID Forest Unit Additional Director General of Police K S N Chikkeroor.

There are 16 squads including the two mobile units functioning in the State.

There are proposals to set up mobile squads in Ankola and Yellapura. There is a need for four to five mobile squads in the State.

5 arrested

Addressing a news conference on Thursday, he said that the squad has so far seized five locally made air guns and arrested five persons.

Most of the accused were caught from Bhadra Reserve Forest area.

During the interrogation, the accused had revealed that a pistol repair shop in market road produces guns. Accordingly, on May 10, the shop was raided and two persons Sathish Achary and Chandrashekar were arrested along with three guns. The accused produce guns for Rs 8,000 and there are strong possibilities of the two supplying guns to poachers and naxalites.

He informed that since Bhadra Reserve Forest is an ecological sensitive area, additional vigil is provided at NR Pura backwater area and Kudremukh forest areas along with Bhadra Reserve Forest.

During April, 2011, he said that two poachers were arrested and horns of two antelopes and two bisons were seized.
