Universal Studios has signed up Justin Haythe, writer of Oscar-nominated the 'Revolutionary Road', to pen the script of the film, Hollywood Reporter said.
'Bronson' director Nicolas Winding Refn is reportedly in talks to direct the project, titled 'Jekyll.' It is being produced by Erwin Stoff and Red Wagon Entertainment's Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher.
The details about the story are being kept under wraps by the makers.
Stevenson's tale about a doctor who scientifically develops an evil self has been translated to the screen and stage numerous times with films like 'Jekyll and Heidi', 1995's 'Dr Jekyll and Ms Hyde'.
It is second project on the story by Universal as the studio is already developing a take on Stevenson's book with Guillermo del Toro. However, Toro's version would be more close to the original tale.
Toro's is currently working on pre-production work on the two films based on JRR Tolkien's 'The Hobbit' and then has a four-film deal with Universal.
