Motorola Solutions to add jobs

Last Updated 15 June 2011, 04:40 IST

"I promised that I would work tirelessly to create a business climate that makes Chicago the most economically competitive city in the nation," Mayor Rahm Emanuel was quoted as saying in a press release.

"I commend Motorola Solutions for expanding its investment here and for bringing these high quality jobs to the people of Chicago," Emanuel added. Motorola Solutions has a strong presence in the Chicago area, with about 5,000 people at its headquarters campus in nearby Schaumburg, Illinois.

The 400 new jobs will be located in the city of Chicago, and will support customer-facing operations including services (global product and business operations), sales support (global sales and field operations) and system integration (global product and business operations), the press release said.

"The Chicago area has been our home for more than 80 years and we are pleased to announce that we will bring more jobs to this great city," said Greg Brown, the Chairman and CEO of Motorola Solutions.

"We believe this area is a world-class location known for its close partnerships with the business community," he added. This is the third major job announcement Emanuel has made since he took office in mid-May, with a total of 2,700 new jobs announced for Chicago since then.

Earlier, GE Capital announced it was adding 1,000 jobs to its Chicago contingent, doubling its staff in Chicago. And last Friday, United Airlines announced it was bringing 1,300 positions to Chicago from around its global operations.

The growth in workforce is part of an ambitious and comprehensive plan instituted by Emanuel in his first 30 days in office, aimed at improving the quality of life in Chicago. The mayor has announced improvements to schools, increased police presence and alternative transportation opportunities like bike lanes, all designed to make Chicago a business-friendly city with an attractive workforce.

Some of the Motorola Solutions positions will be relocations and some of them will be new hires. They will be filled by the end of 2012. Motorola Solutions, formerly known as Motorola Inc, was founded on January 4, 2011, following the spin-off of the mobile phones division into Motorola Mobility in 2011.

The company houses the Enterprise Mobility Solutions division and networks division of the former Motorola.
