It’s a tiny little place in Model House on the 4th Street in Basavanagudi which offers a variety of mouth-watering chaats and a sumptuous breakfast.

If you are not too fussy about the place and have no problem relishing the food, standing roadside, then Sri Sai Chats, should be an ideal hangout.

Popular for its Idli, ottu shavige upma and rice items that are homemade, the joint serves fresh food at all times. The breakfast menu consists of Idli and a rice items. Every Thursday and Sunday, the menu includes Shavige Upma which is made of smooth vermicelli that is cooked at home in a traditional style. The Idli comes with two varieties of chutney — green and tomato chutney. “We started this joint fifteen years ago. Four years back we moved to the present location and started serving breakfast. It was a turning point in our business. Now, we do brisk business in the morning and sell more than a thousand idlis a day,” says Savitha, one of the owners of the eatery who runs the place with her husband Nagbhushan and sister Uma Maheshwari.

Chaat addicts have a wide range to choose from. One gets regular chaats items like bhel, tikki, nippattu puri along with boaty masala, bhel masala, pineapple masala, ‘cucumber mix’ and corn masala. Evening menu also includes sandwich and upma. “This place is on our way to the office, hence we often come here for our breakfast. Idlis are smooth and soft. I like the aroma of the tomato chutney which is not too spicy. Even though, this locality has so many other restaurants with seating facility, we prefer this place because we find the food not too oily. My friends say that even the chaats are worth trying but I have not yet got an opportunity to taste them,” says Manohar, a resident of N R Colony.
Veena Uday, a professional, is also a regular to the shop along with her friends. She says she likes tikki puri and mix masala.

“The lack of seating facility has never been an issue for us. In fact we like the idea of having chaats one after another in a natural setting. Sometimes, we pack up stuff for our family members as well,” she says.

The Sri Sai Chats is located near the NR Colony Bus Stop on Sai Baba Temple Road. For details, call 9900416285.
