“Provide information on the reasons for not interrogating Warren Anderson as per the available records,” Chief Information Commissioner Shailesh Gandhi said in the order.

The panel gave direction to the CBI while deciding an RTI application filed by Lucknow-based lawyer S P Mishra.  Mishra in his application had asked for the list of those charged and those interrogated in the case and the reasons for not interrogating Anderson during his visit to India after December 6, 1984, even after the case was handed over to the country’s top investigating agency before July 10, 2011.

The lethal methyl isocyanate  gas leakage from the Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant in Bhopal on December 2 and 3, 1984  claimed the lives of 3,000 people instantly and 25,000 over the years. According to an estimate, more than 5,00,000 continue to suffer from the ill-effects of the gas till date.
