China floods kill 175

Four rounds of torrential rains that battered the region since June 3 have caused floods and landslides in several southwestern and southern provinces in the Yangtze river basin, the ministry said in a statement.

The disasters affected over 36 million people and left about 1.6 million displaced in the provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the Chongqing Municipality.
The direct economic loss was estimated at 35 billion yuan (about $5 billion).

The finance and civil affairs ministries allocated 165 million yuan as subsidies for residents in the flood-affected areas, the ministry statement said.
