The incident took place in Hanamkonda town when Handlooms and Textiles Minister Shankar Rao arrived to pay his last respects to Telangana ideologue K. Jayashankar, who died Tuesday.

Raising slogans of "Jai Telangana", students and activists of various pro-Telangana groups hurled stones and footwear at the minister's convoy, police said.

Police officials rushed to the minister's rescue and escorted him to safety. The window panes of the minister's car were damaged in the attack.

For the second day, leaders of the ruling Congress party have come under attack from mourners and Telangana activists. They roughed up parliament members S. Rajaiah and G. Vivek Tuesday when they came to Jayashankar's house to pay their homage.

Angry mourners have vowed not to allow leaders of the Congress and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) pay their respects to the late leader or attend his funeral scheduled later in the day.

The protestors, including students of Kakatiya University, alleged that leaders of the two parties are responsible for the delay in formation of a separate state as they were not ready to quit their posts.
