Sania to undergo MRI today, final word on doubles tomorrow

Last Updated 22 June 2011, 11:09 IST

"The doctor wants to get her to do an MRI today before allowing her to play in doubles and mixed at Wimbledon. The main concern will be that she should not damage the knee further," Sania's father and coach Imran told PTI.

"As for the pain, she is ready to fight through that, provided the doctor gives her the clearance that the injury will not deteriorate."

Sania is scheduled to compete in women's doubles with Russian Elena Vesnina and for the mixed doubles she has teamed up with compatriot Rohan Bopanna.

Sania lost her first round singles match yesterday after taking the field with the help of some pain killers.

Her left leg was strapped below the knee and despite the pain and discomfort, she managed to win the second set and take the match to the deciding third set.

Interestingly, it was 151st match, including doubles, for Sania in the last one year as she has played continuously after making a comeback in Birmingham event, last year.

She competed in the Commonwealth Games, the Asian Games and had to play a lot of qualifying matches in the circuit as low ranking did not allow her to make a direct entry into WTA events.

Her hard work paid off as she is now close to top-50 in singles after starting the year at 166 and is enjoying career-best doubles rank of 14th.Sania will take a break from the circuit after Wimbledon.
