He was speaking during the bicycle distribution programme organised on Wednesday at the Government Junior College premises in the City.
“Poor and destitute children should be given first preference,” he added.
Better attendance
School children will be inspired to attend school regularly if they have bicycles. Students can now come to school from even distant places and villages. Attendance in schools will improve, said Bachegowda.
“This, in turn, will improve the chances of the children getting better education,” Bachegowda said.
The legislator said a rule is being formed to exclude students travelling by buses and living in hostels from getting the bicycles.
“If such a rule is enforced, it will only be an act of unfairness,” he added.
Other facilities
C U Chandrashekhar, Deputy Director of Public Instruction, said in addition to the bicycles, students will be provided mid-day meals and other facilities “which will inspire students to attend schools.”
No facilities
Mallikarjuna, the headmaster of the Government High School, said the School is facing lack of basic facilities.
“The students do not have enough space to move about. Furniture is also in shortage,” he said and added that the government has been requested to solve the problems.
