Working in the Public Works Department (PWD), Arun Kumar Singh was leading a happy marital life with wife Rajni, whom he wedded in 1989, and had three sons. But 22 years down the line, there was a twist in the tale.

A woman — Sonamati — who worked as a maid had become the third angle of the triangular love story.

Besotted with her (maid) radiant charm, Arun wanted to get rid of his 50-year-old wife and tie the nuptial knot with the 35-year-old “dusky damsel.”

So one fine evening, he told his wife that instead of Chandramukhi, she looked more like a Suryamukhi (read: unattractive). A verbal duel ensued between the middle-aged couple, followed by physical abuse by Arun. When the blows became unbearable, Rajni left for Mumbai to stay with one of her sons.

Compromising position

Last week, when she returned to her house after a gap of more than six months, she was aghast to find the maid in a compromising position with her husband. All hell broke loose. In the melee, she was roughed up by Arun and his maid-turned-mistress Sonamati.

A bruised and battered Rajni went to the Mehandiganj police station to seek justice and lodged a case against her husband and his paramour.

As an out-of-court settlement, Arun offered her financial support but it cut little ice with Rajni. Bitten by the love bug, Arun had no option other than to flee from the place with his lady love. But before leaving for an unidentified destination, he handed over jewellery worth Rs 2 lakh to Rajni and asked her to take care.

“A case has been lodged in this connection. We are investigating the matter. Hopefully, Rajni will get justice soon,” said officer-in-charge R K Singh.
