Sangvekar shines as Karnataka retain title

Defending champions return with 69 medals; Maharashtra second

Defending champions Karnataka tallied 528 points (24 gold, 17 silver, 28 bronze) to beat back the challenge of Maharashtra, who garnered 468 points (26 gold, 12 silver, 13 bronze). Tamil Nadu swimmers put up a valiant effort but had to be satisfied with third place with 19 gold, 22 silver and 13 bronze medals.

Saurabh stormed to victory in the 16-lap event, clocking 8:24.97, bettering the old mark by a good 18 seconds. The 17-year-old erased State-mate AP Gagan’s two-year-old mark of 8:43.60. Soon after, Saurabh, who trains under National coach Pradeep Kumar at the Basavangudi Aquatic Centre, touched the tape in 57.94 to pocked the 100 butterfly gold.

Saurabh’s five gold medals and two National records -- 800 and 200 freestyle -- got him the best swimmer award in the Group I boys category. Karnataka’s Group I boys’ 4x100M medley relay team obliterated the National mark. The quartet of Pranam B, Akash Rohit, Saurabh and Ajay A posted 4:07.71 to rewrite the  previous mark of 4:08.35 created by Delhi in 2006.

The State Group II boys’ quartet of Pushpanand H, Likith SP, Md Yaqoob Saleem and Nikhil Rajaram timed 4:30.13 to bag the corresponding title.  Akash Rohit took home his fourth gold when he timed 2:30.46 to win the Group I boys’ 200M breaststroke. In the corresponding Group II event, Likith SP clocked 2:39.11 to complete a double.

In the water polo competitions, Karnataka girls clinched bronze. The State lasses routed Bengal 7-1 in their last league match to register their second win from four matches.
