Last Updated 09 August 2011, 17:24 IST

The boy has been identified as Harithgowda, son of Raju alias Pradeep, belonging to Chandagaalu village in the taluk. He had visited the government hospital in the town complaining of itching in the body and the doctor had prescribed 20 Aciclovir tablets. However, the tablets given had an expiry date of June 2011.

The parents have given the tablets without noticing the expiry causing an increase in itching.  Subsequently, he developed fever and stomach ache. He was later taken to a hospital in Mysore. The boy’s father Raju told Deccan Herald that he had visited the government hospital in the town on August 4. As he did not know to read, he took the medicine prescribed and gave it to his son.

Hospital administrator Dr K B Shivakumar, however, clarified that the hospital does not stock any tablets whose expiry dates have passed.
