Third biggest strike in 6 years

Last Updated 07 September 2011, 18:13 IST

A similar attempt was made by unidentified persons on May 25, 2011,  but it could not succeed. A low intensity bomb was planted outside the Delhi High Court complex which exploded damaging one car. No one was injured in the incident.

The High Court complex is spread over an area of around 4.57 acres and over 5,000 people visit it every day. It houses 700 lawyer chambers. It has about 3,500 lawyers visiting it on normal days. The number of visitors increases every Wednesday, the day for public interest litigations.

The capital has consistently been on terror radar. On September 19, last year, two motorcycle-borne terrorists opened fire at a group of foreign tourists near the Jama Masjid in Old Delhi, injuring two Taiwanese—Zewei and Chiang— ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

About three hours later, while police were busy enquiring into the incident, an explosion took place in an abandoned car, parked about 150 metres from the spot. No one was injured in the blast, but it led to panic in the locality.

Terrorists struck in the national capital on September 13 in 2008 and rocked the metro by triggering five serial blasts within 45 minutes across Connaught Place, Ghaffar market in Karol Bagh and the M-Block market of Greater Kailash-I in South Delhi. At least 25 people were killed in the serial explosion and over 100 injured.

Exactly two weeks later, a blast triggered by unidentified persons in Mehrauli’s flower market left three dead and 17 injured.  In October 2005, too, Delhi had witnessed serial blasts in Sarojini Nagar and Paharganj markets, and one in a bus in the Govindpuri area of the national capital.
