Plans to accommodate up to 12,000 flats in multi-storyed blocks

The new ‘Tirumazhisai Satellite Township’ to be built with all the basic amenities including a school, hospital and community centre, would cost Rs  2,160 Crore, Chief Minister, J Jayalalitha told the Assembly on Thursday.

The Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB), which already possesses 311.95 acres in Trimazhisai area, will undertake this project, she said. Another 12.87 acres of land needed for the approach road would be acquired soon.

With ‘Greater Chennai expanding rapidly’ and property prices hitting the roof, housing is getting unaffordable for a vast majority of the middle class and economically lower income groups, Jayalalitha said. The satellite city would come as a big boost to them, giving them an opportunity to buy a flat at a reasonable price, she said. It would accommodate up to 12,000 flats in multi-storied blocks.

The previous DMK regime had planned a similar satellite city for Chennai near the Vandalur zoo area south of the overcrowded metropolis, as it can no longer expand. The metro has already one of the highest population densities in the country. However, the project could not take off due to stiff opposition from the PMK led by S Ramadoss, who did not want farm lands in neighbouring Kancheepuram and Thorvaldsen districts to be converted into real estate in the name of building a satellite city.

Jayalalitha also announced several other mega residential and office complex project on unutilised lands in the city by the TNHB and the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board.

These include a 554 apartment complex near Ashok pillar in the city at a cost of Rs 100 crore and another Rs 100 crore 17-storied major office complex at Nandanam. These projects will also give a fillip to the construction industry in the state.

The project

*  To be build with amenties, including school, hospital and community centre.
*  Estimated cost of building the satellite township comes around Rs 2,160 crore
*  Tamil Nadu Housing Board to undertake the job
*  Plan to acquire more land for the project
