Withdrawal of monsoon may be delayed

Last Updated 09 September 2011, 18:44 IST

The Ministry of Earth Sciences said in a press release on Friday that rainfall activity would decrease over northwest India from September 17.

“There is also some possibility of the commencement of withdrawal of monsoon from parts of northwest India towards the end of the week. Remaining parts would receive scattered to fairly widespread rainfall activity,” the press release said.

Monsoon is not likely to be withdrawn in the next week as per normal pattern, it said adding normally the southwest monsoon starts withdrawing from western parts of Rajasthan around 1 September.

“However, current and prognostic meteorological conditions indicate that withdrawal of monsoon will be delayed.”

There will be fairly widespread rainfall over Western Himalayan Region, central and adjoining peninsular India and also along the west coast during the most part of the week.

Fairly widespread rainfall would also occur over east India during the first half of the week and decrease thereafter.

Scattered rain/thundershowers would occur over plains of northwest India and northeastern states.

Subdued rainfall activity is likely over southeast peninsula.
