“RCB have a very good chance to go all the way in the tournament. We came close to winning the IPL, and this time we want to take that extra step and win the title. We have got a good squad here, and hopefully we will be competitive enough,” Gayle said.

Gayle’s exploits for RCB in the IPL IV has been well-chronicled, and the Jamaican was understandably hoping for a repeat. “I’m looking forward to great things. This is the first time I’m playing in the Champions League. The IPL was good, but I’m back to square one and starting afresh. I want to get into the groove, and give my team a good start.”

So, what made him perform well for RCB? “I got a very good reception here on the first day itself. I am in my comfort zone here and it reflected in my cricket.”

However, he refused to buy the theory that RCB’s performance is centered around him. “It’s not really that so much will depend on me. We have other capable players and match-winners – a lot of international experienced guys and local guys.”

While admitting he’s a tad nervous, Gayle played down the talks of him not getting much practice ahead of the CLT20. “I haven’t played much competitive cricket after the IPL. But I’m a person who is always working – always in the gym and play a few games. But the most important part is to get mentally ready. The hunger to score is there, and I’m also a little nervous since I haven’t been out there in the middle much.”
