Govt pulled up in Bhanwari case

Last Updated 20 September 2011, 17:22 IST

Bhanwari Devi has been missing for the last 20 days from a Jodhpur village. The police investigating the case is yet to trace the woman.

The court order came after Bhanwari Devi’s husband Amarchand moved a habeas corpus petition in the court. The court asked the government to reply on the matter by September 22.

Amarchand had alleged in the petition that high profile people in the government were involved in the abduction of his wife. He has also expressed no confidence in the ongoing police probe. Amarchand further alleged that the police were trying to cover up the investigation as many of the ruling Congress leaders, including a minister, were allegedly behind the abduction.

Meanwhile, Amarchand announced that he would go an indefinite hunger strike in front of the collectorate from September 21 if the police failed to make any breakthrough in the case by that time. He wanted to know as to why the police are not questioning the political leaders, alleged to be behind his wife’s abduction.

The case came to prominence in the wake of talk about a CD, allegedly containing Bhanwari Devi with some Congress leaders, including state cabinet minister,in a compromising posture.
