Four helping of humour

The play at Alliance Franciase, last week, was crisply comical, with a coating of satire glazed over it, and freshly garnished with a burst of youthful energy and enthusiasm.
Cult Production’s four short plays, titled Comically incorrect were like four courses of a meal, each leading to the other, and serving the best for the last. The play swung between loud, bold, subtle and silent striking a perfect balance. Wit and humour was carefully added making it lively and entertaining. Also that the play was just an hour long, made the dialogues and its delivery more eloquent. Despite the amateur actors, mostly college-going students, they delivered a power-packed performance. The plays were directed by Daniel and written by Anton Chekov.
They were all based on Russian backdrop and characters, with unpronounceable names. Despite that, there was a very earthy appeal to the play as it downplayed the cultural aspect and brought out the life’s daily troubles and frustrations, turning ‘what's not fair’, into a humour filled journey. In short turning situations when we often feel ‘uncomically incorrect’ to ‘comically incorrect’.
The play opened with The Defenceless Creature, a callous confrontation between a bank manager having gout and a noisy housewife. The second play was called, The Arrangement which shows a father's concern to give his 19-year-old son a gift, a gift of manhood, but ultimately changing his mind. The third is a take on the eternal woe of a dental patient who is paranoid having to sit on a dentist’s chair and being treated by a student dentist. The final play was the longest and probably the best of all, called The Seduction.
A practical demonstration of how to seduce a married woman with a little help from her husband, a perfect dessert to the hearty meal made of Russian ingredients, served on an Indian platter.
