Mukesh back as coach

Former player to work with senior side under Nobbs

“Mukesh is one of the most respected players in the country and his service is always needed,” said HI secretary general Narinder Batra, confirming his appointment. “He will work under chief coach Michael Nobbs. I am confident he will play a great role in shaping the fortunes of the team as it embarks on some important journeys in the coming months.

“Working under Nobbs will also help Mukesh in many ways. If he can combine well with Nobbs, it will be a good boost to our side. I am sure Nobbs too will benefit from Mukesh’s knowledge,” added Batra.

The secretary general, however, refused to comment on Mukesh’s contract. “There is no fixed contract as such. He will continue to work under Nobbs and only if the Australian feels Mukesh is not doing a good job will he be removed.

Otherwise, he will continue to stay on for all tournaments and camps.”

Mukesh’s appointment comes after HI unceremoniously demoted the three-time Olympian from the rank of chief junior national coach to coach hours after he had touched base at the Sports Authority of India campus on Thursday last to formally kick-start his reign.
Completely miffed at the appointment of sacked senior coach Harendra Singh as chief junior coach, Mukesh left the junior camp and vowed never to return.

“What happened then was definitely bitter,” said Mukesh. “However, past is past and I am happy to play a part in the development of Indian hockey. During my interviews in February, HI asked me to coach the women’s team. I told them I would coach the junior side or work under a foreigner in the senior side.

“I am looking forward to working with Nobbs. He has done well in his short stint. Being the coach of a senior squad is an honour and I will share whatever knowledge I have,” added the dynamic winger, who will report for duty on Thursday.
