Last Updated 17 August 2009, 19:25 IST

Ganguly’s niece, Sneha, 11,a student of Fifth standard in La Martiniere School, has been admitted to the isolation ward of M R Bangur Hospital here on Monday, Tapas Sen, the state’s nodal officer for A(H1N1) influenza, told newsmen.

Sneha’s family has said that the girl could have contracted the virus in her school. Though she remains under medical supervision, she is said to be in a stable condition.  The five who tested positive for the virus have been admitted to Infectious Disease(ID) hospital here. Despite the increasing number of infections, West Bengal has had no deaths so far from A(H1N1).

As both designated hospitals in the city packed to capacity, the health department has began advising patients to be quarantined and treated at home. Some patients have apparently been sent home with necessary medicines. The department has plans to open one more referral unit at Salt Lake.
